While many colleges are now test-optional, the SAT score remains a significant part of many applications. Understanding the typical score ranges for your target schools is key to crafting a competitive application.
The 25th-75th Percentile Rule
Colleges often publish the SAT score range for the middle 50% of their admitted students. This is the range between the 25th percentile and the 75th percentile.
- 25th Percentile: 25% of admitted students scored at or below this number. Scoring below this makes the school a "reach."
- 75th Percentile: 75% of admitted students scored at or below this number (meaning 25% scored above). Scoring above this makes you a very competitive applicant.
Your Goal: Aim for a score that is closer to the 75th percentile to maximize your chances of admission.
